  • Soil/PH/Texture: very little soil is required if any, organic soils tend to make it more orange in color where white sandy soils are used it will only have green leaves,  mildly acidic to mildly alkaline, (pH 6.1 – 7.8)

  • Pests/Diseases: no serious pests or diseases – root rot is the biggest problem caused from over watering

  • Characteristics: Grown for its foliage, this large Bromeliad has leaves that are thick and leathery with spiny margins, 2” – 3” wide, and usually yellowish green with red tips and red spines, some turning a deep red/burgundy. The blooms are short and red when they appear but after blooming the plant will die, but it replaces itself with pups at its base.
  • Propagation: by division or offsets/pups that will grow at is base to replace the mother plant after it blooms and dies.

  • Facts: it is an endangered species due to the destruction of its native habitat.
  • Designer Considerations: use as a border along sidewalks, in a garden bed, around the base of a specimen tree or plant, or as a container plant for your patio or deck.
