- Growth: Fast
- Zone: USDA Zones 10 through 12

- Drought tolerance: Moderate
- Pests/Diseases: No major pests or diseases.
- Growing conditions: Grow this plant in a sunny, warm, well-drained area. Soil should not be overly wet. - Characteristics: This plant is unique among cacti, in that it forms a shrub and does not have succulent leaves. The thick stems and branches turn from green to brown with age and are armed with numerous spines. The leaves, which grow alternately, are glossy green with a short petiole and entire margin, and often curl downwards at the apex. Showy pink flowers grow in groups of two or more at the ends of stems. Fruits are fleshy and pear-shaped and come in shades of green, yellow, or red.
- Propagation: By cuttings
- Facts: It has edible leaves which are used in salads. The specific epithet “grandifolia” is derived from Latin and means “large leaves”.
- Designer considerations: It is a unique-looking and effective hedge, but should be located away from walkways and other areas frequented by people due to its sharp spines. Planting a shorter border in front of it can add space for safety while still displaying the plant’s unique features.
