Butterfly Garden

  • Common Name: Pink morning glory
  • Scientific Name: Iopmoea carnea
  • Family Name: Convolvulaceae
  • Origin: Tropical America
  • Height: 8 ft
  • Width: 8 ft
  • Growth: Fast
  • Zone: USDA Zones 8 through 11
  • Light needs: Full sun
  • Salt tolerance: Low
  • Soil/pH/Texture: Prefers a well-drained, fertile soil, but is adaptable to a range of soil types. An acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5 is preferable.
  • Moisture: Moderate water needs – soil should be uniformly moist
  • Drought tolerance: Moderate
  • Pests/Diseases: No major pests or diseases
  • Growing conditions: Grow this plant in a warm, sunny, and well-drained area. It will need a trellis or fence to grow on if an erect shrub is desired, otherwise the branches will droop towards the ground. It is a low-maintenance plant which grows quickly and is drought tolerant once established. It spreads aggressively and will need regular trimming to control its growth.
  • Characteristics: Left along, this plant will form a wide, squat shrub with drooping branches. A fence or trellis will allow this plant to climb and become taller and have a more formal appearance. Lower branches become woody as the plant matures. The leaves are lance shaped, covered with short hairs, and grow alternately along the stems. Flowers are trumpet shaped and light pink with dark pink centers. The fruits are small brown capsules.
  • Propagation: By seeds and stem cuttings.
  • Wildlife: Bees and other large pollinators are attracted to the flowers.
  • Facts: The stems can be used for making paper, and some parts of the plant are used for their medicinal properties.
  • Designer considerations: It is a good choice for cottage gardens. It can add height or width to a landscape, depending on how it is grown. Grow it without support for a more natural, drooping, and sprawling appearance, or grow it on a trellis or fence for a more upright, formal appearance.
