  • Soil/PH/Texture: use a porous soil that drains well, mildly acidic – mildly alkaline (pH 6.1 – 7.8) fertilize bi-weekly during the summer months to encourage a thick and healthy growth but stop feeding in the winter months.
  • Soil Moisture: water plant frequently but make sure to not over water.

  • Pests/Diseases: no serious pests or diseases but can occasionally get scale or mealy bugs.
  • Growing Conditions: easy to grow and low maintenance
  • Characteristics: grown for its beautiful foliage of Blue green – Burgundy/Maroon with cream-colored variegation along scalloped edges of its 1” – 2” leaves that may turn red or pink when in full sun or in dry conditions. The stems can grow up to 24” and will bend towards the soil to be able to sprout roots and grow new plants. Blooms are clusters of purple, red, or coral and shaped like bells usually appearing in late winter – early spring.
  • Propagation: by leaf cuttings, division, seed, simple layering, stooling or mound layering. (plant is viviparous)
  • Wildlife: flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
  • Facts: may cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction when handled, also pollen from it can cause the same reactions. The plant is named after the botanist Boris Fedtschenkoi, native to Madagascar but has now established itself in the Southern United States.
  • Designer Considerations: use as a ground cover in rock, succulent or other garden beds in your landscape, as a border, as a houseplant, in hanging planters or as a container plant for your patio.
