There are several large thorns that grow from the nodes. The flowers are large and bright pink with five heart-shaped petals. As with other members of the Rosa genus, the centers of the flowers are quite large compared to other roses and have many prominent, yellow stamens. The fruits, also called hips, are bright red and berry-like.
  • Propagation: By seeds, cuttings, and division of suckers. Cuttings and suckers are more commonly used, as seeds can take a long time to germinate.
  • Wildlife: Birds eat the fruits.
  • Facts: This plant often hybridizes with other members of the Rosa genus. The fruits are used to produce rose hip syrup, and the petals are used to flavor jam.
  • Designer considerations: This plant forms a large, spreading shrub which is perfect as a foundation plant or specimen plant. It fits perfectly in cottage gardens and even formal gardens if trained properly. Plant it wherever a splash of color is needed, as this plant produces many bright, beautiful pink flowers.
