  • Scientific name: Aechmea
  • Family name: Bromeliaceae
  • Origin: Florida
  • Height: 18-24 inches
  • Width: 24-36 inches
  • Growth: Slow
  • Zone: 11
  • Light needs: Part Sun to Full Sun
  • Salt tolerance: Poor

  • Moisture: Absorbs water through a cup in its center – should be flushed out and refilled about once a week
  • Drought tolerance: High
  • Pests/Diseases: Mosquitoes and scale may breed in the water cup. Root rot may occur with overwatering.
  • Growing conditions: Grows best in partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. It is an epiphyte, so it can be grown without soil with a soil-less medium around its roots, or in the branches of trees. Can also be grown in a container. Its water cup should be flushed out regularly to avoid stagnation.
  • Characteristics: Leaves are long, smooth, simple, green, and arranged as a rosette around a central point. Margins of the leaves are spiny. Flowers grow in showy clusters of hot pink, purple, and blue bracts, which emerge on a stem from the center of the plant.
  • Propagation: By offsets
  • Wildlife: Water cup may be a home for mosquitoes or a frog.
  • Facts: This plant was hybridized by Bullis Bromeliads.
  • Designer considerations: Its showy flowers provide a splash of color to trees, or for mass planting. Its simple and smooth leaves can be paired with more densely foliated plants.
