  • Common Name: Allamanda (Peaches and Cream)
  • Scientific Name: Allamanda Peach Mianaus
  • Family Name: Apocynaceae
  • Origin: Tropical America
  • Height: Depends on supporting structure.
  • Width: Depends on supporting structure.
  • Growth: Rapid growth, aggressive spreading.
  • Zone: 9B – 11
  • Light Needs: Full sun (for best flowering but can tolerate some shade).
  • Salt Tolerance:  Moderate
  • Soil/PH/Texture: Grows well in most soils, clay, sand, loam – but becomes chlorotic in very alkaline conditions. Strongly acidic – acidic (pH 5.1 – 6.0)
  • Soil Moisture: Moderate – medium moisture but well-drained.
  • Drought Tolerance: High
  • Pests/Diseases: No serious pests or diseases of major concern, only occasionally bothered by caterpillars or mites. Thin stems to create air circulation if you see fungal diseases attack the foliage.
  • Growing Conditions: Prune in spring before growth begins. It may be desirable to prune annually in any case to control for size. Regular pinching will keep the plant in bounds, but too much pinching removes flower buds which form on new growth.
  • Characteristics: This twining evergreen vine has simple, green, whorled leaves, 4” – 8” in length, oblong shaped with pinnate venation. It has trumpet shaped flowers that can get as big as 5” across that bloom year-round and have a fragrant smell. Its prickly 1” – 3” seed pods have winged seeds that fly in the air when the pod dries and breaks open.
  • Propagation: Propagation is by cutting or by division of the many sprouts which appear at the base of the main plant.
  • Wildlife: Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
  • Facts: Milky sap and it is considered poisonous, actually all parts are highly cathartic and should be used with caution in areas frequented by young children.
  • Designer Considerations: Train up a trellis, arbor, pergola, tree, or side of a building where there is support. With proper pruning, it makes a very attractive free-standing specimen shrub. Allamanda will cascade over a retaining wall and makes a nice hanging basket and works well as a container plant for patios if kept under control.
