  • Soil/pH/Texture: As with most other Oncidium species, it is epiphytic, best suited to growing on tree trunks and branches instead of in the ground. If planted in a container, use a bark based orchid medium to ensure adequate drainage.
  • Moisture: Water with lukewarm water about once a week, allowing the roots and substrate to dry out between waterings. Air humidity should be at least 40 percent.

  • Pests/Diseases: Fungal diseases and rot may occur with inadequate drainage or poor air circulation.
  • Growing conditions: As an epiphytic plant, it prefers to grow on tree branches where it will receive dappled light. If growing this plant indoors, the best way to imitate these conditions is by placing it near a source of bright yet indirect light, such as a south-facing window. Adequate air humidity can be achieved by placing a tray filled with pebbles and water directly below the plant’s container. As with most orchids, it is heat-loving and needs day temperatures between 70 and 85 °F during the day and 60 to 65 °F at night.
  • Characteristics: One of the largest Oncidium species, the flower spikes can bring this plant up to 5 ft in height. The roots are thick, providing the rest of the plant with support. The long, glossy leaves grow from sheathed pseudobulbs (pod-like structures) at the base of the plant. The tall flower spikes produce a large number of inch-long yellow-and-red flowers which have a weak fragrance.

  • Facts: This species is known as the Kandyan Dancer Orchid due to its resemblance to the outfits of Kandyan Dancers from Sri Lanka.
